Types of Locks and Their Uses

To pick the best lock for a certain part of the home, consult a professional locksmith knowledgeable in the field.

Home and business security should never be overlooked. Locks are an integral security component and must be chosen carefully and correctly. Different rooms and sections require unique security levels. Understanding the lock options makes it possible to find a solution that works. Some of these options include:

Deadbolt locks

These locks are a cost-efficient and effective way of securing external doors. Normally, the locking mechanism involves a cylinder running directly through the door. A keyhole is installed on the outside. This is where the key is inserted and turned to move the bolt in the cylinder to lock the door. On the doorframe, there is a strike plate. It’s a rectangular piece of metal responsible for securing the bolt and preventing the frame from ripping if there is pressure on the door.

Deadbolts have a single or double cylinder. The single cylinder needs only one key that’s inserted from the outside. The inside has a knob that’s turned to lock and unlock the door. For a double cylinder, a key is needed for either side. Double cylinders may be considered a hazard when a key is needed to exit the home during emergencies.

Combination locks

These require a sequence of symbols, letters, or numbers to open. In many cases, they have a keypad to facilitate entry. One may use rotating dials linked to internal discs. These locks may be electronic, single-dial, or multiple-dial.

The single-dial locks use one combination attached to the spindle or rod. Turning the dial makes the spindle interact with the discs within. The spindle makes the discs turn with the dial. Once the discs line up, the lock will open. Such locks are used for safes, school lockers, and padlocks.

Multiple-dial locks have more than one dial. Instead of one dial running all discs, some dials are set manually for the internal disc notches to line up the right way to open. These can be used in many ways: briefcases, luggage, and bikes.

Electronic combinations have a single dial, and the sequence entry method differs. A keypad is used to enter symbols, letters, or numbers. They are common on secured containers, lockers, and safes.

Stealth or electronic locks

Some of the above options may have electronic variations. However, some locks are primarily electronic and can secure cabinets and doors in high-priority areas. A numerical keypad is mounted on the furniture or doors. They are keyless options.

Installing such a system may be costly and require technical knowledge. They are used in rooms with limited access, on high-priority containers, safes, clinics, and offices. They can also secure rooms in banks, hospitals, and airports.

Glass door locks

These are best suited for glass doors and are available in different forms to give the best option for a project. The locks could have variations as described above. They are commonly used for patio and backyard doors. They are stylish and designed to match décor.
