Simple Tips to Secure the Home

Locking the doors of a home is common practice, but it's also necessary to be sure those locks are secure.

Securing a home can seem like a daunting task. There are many facets of security and safety to consider in the home – doors, windows, garages, etc. But one can improve the home's security by making simple changes and installations.

Install a security system

Installing a home security system is one of the best ways to ensure a home is safe. Myriads of options exist, from DIY-installed systems to professionally installed and monitored security systems. Depending on the home's special security needs, it's important to find the appropriate level of security monitoring and a system that can do the hard work of keeping the home secure.

Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Although most homes have smoke detectors, not all are checked regularly to ensure they're in perfect working order. Check smoke detectors regularly to be sure they have working batteries (they begin to beep if the batteries are losing power) and run a test to ensure they're in working order. Meanwhile, carbon monoxide detectors are not always installed in a home by default. If a home risks potential carbon monoxide issues, install detectors to take that worry off the list.

Lock the doors correctly

Locking the doors of a home is common practice, but it's also necessary to be sure those locks are secure. A lock isn't effective if a burglar can reach through a mail slot or window to unlock the front door. Likewise, ensure the previous owner doesn't have keys to the current locks. Replacing the locks will stop anyone from entering the door.

One should also check hinges and door frames to ensure they're strong and in good working order. Any smart locks and doorknobs should have the code changed regularly. In addition, please make sure the locks themselves are secure and can't be easily removed.

Secure the windows

Doors aren't the only entry point to a home for burglars and criminals. Windows are also easy to enter if they aren't secured properly. Be sure that window locks are functional and secure. Window locks also should be tested to be sure they can open easily from the inside to prevent fire safety hazards.

Broken windows leave a weak point in the home's security perimeter. Repair them to create a barrier to intruders and not an easy way through the home's defenses.

Let there be light!

Lighting up the yard is aesthetically pleasing and adds to home security. If the yard is well-lit, intruders are less likely to try to sneak into a home. Front door lighting also deters unwanted visitors.

Secure the garage

Doors and windows are often the focus when securing the outside of the home. But the garage is an often-neglected entry point that can easily be opened if not protected. Lock all garage doors and keep any openings from being accessible to strangers. Consider a smart lock to upgrade garage door security. If one uses an entry code, keep it secret and secure.
